Understanding the Difference: Full Body vs Surface Coating
To understand why full body tiles last longer, you first need to understand how standard surface-coated tiles are made. In a glazed tile (whether ceramic or GVT/PGVT), the decorative colour and pattern exist only in the glaze layer — a thin coating applied to the surface of the tile body before firing. This glaze layer is typically 0.5–1.5mm thick. The tile body beneath the glaze is a different colour — usually white, cream, or grey.
In a full body tile, the colour and texture are incorporated throughout the entire thickness of the tile — from the top surface to the bottom. This is achieved by using pigmented raw materials in the tile body itself, so the colour is consistent at every depth. There is no separate glaze layer — the surface is the body itself, polished or textured as required.
Why Full Body Tiles Last Longer: The Chip Test
The most compelling demonstration of full body tile durability is the chip test. Take a surface-coated tile and chip the edge — you will see the white or grey body beneath the glaze, making the damage immediately obvious. Take a full body tile and chip the edge — the exposed body is the same colour as the surface, making the damage virtually invisible.
This is not just an aesthetic advantage. In high-traffic commercial environments — airports, shopping malls, hospitals — tile edges and corners are constantly subjected to impact from trolleys, luggage, and heavy foot traffic. Surface-coated tiles in these environments show visible edge chipping within months. Full body tiles maintain their appearance for years, even decades, under the same conditions.
Technical Comparison: Full Body vs Surface Coating
| Property | Surface Coating (GVT/PGVT) | Full Body |
|---|---|---|
| Colour consistency | Surface only | Through entire thickness |
| Edge chip visibility | Highly visible (different body colour) | Virtually invisible (same colour throughout) |
| PEI Abrasion Rating | 3–5 (varies by glaze) | 5 (highest rating) |
| Breaking Strength | >1300N | >1800N |
| Water Absorption | <0.5% | <0.5% |
| Design Range | Very wide (digital printing) | Limited (solid colours, stone-look) |
| Cost | Lower to moderate | Moderate to higher |
| Best Application | Residential, light commercial | Heavy commercial, industrial |
Where Full Body Tiles Are Specified
Full body tiles are the standard specification for environments where long-term durability and appearance retention are critical:
- Airports and transit hubs: Millions of passengers with luggage wheels and trolleys. Full body tiles maintain their appearance for 20+ years in these environments.
- Shopping malls: High foot traffic, trolleys, and frequent cleaning with commercial-grade chemicals. Full body tiles withstand all of these without visible wear.
- Hospitals and healthcare facilities: Heavy medical equipment, frequent mopping with disinfectants, and the need for a consistently clean appearance.
- Industrial facilities: Forklifts, heavy machinery, and chemical spills. Full body tiles with 20mm thickness can even withstand vehicular traffic.
- Hotel lobbies and corridors: High foot traffic with luggage. Full body tiles maintain their premium appearance without visible wear.
When Surface Coating Tiles Are the Better Choice
Despite the durability advantages of full body tiles, surface-coated GVT and PGVT tiles are the better choice in many situations:
- Design variety: Digital printing technology allows GVT/PGVT tiles to replicate virtually any design — marble, wood, concrete, abstract patterns — with photographic accuracy. Full body tiles are limited to solid colours and basic stone-look designs.
- Residential applications: In homes, the edge-chipping durability advantage of full body tiles is rarely needed. The wider design range of GVT/PGVT tiles makes them the better choice for residential projects.
- Cost: GVT/PGVT tiles are generally more cost-effective than full body tiles for equivalent sizes and designs.
- Polished finish: Full body tiles can be polished, but the polished surface of PGVT tiles is generally superior in terms of gloss level and visual depth.
Livenza Granito Full Body Tile Range
Livenza Granito manufactures full body tiles at our Morbi facility in 600x600mm, 600x1200mm, and 800x1600mm sizes. Our full body range includes concrete-look, stone-look, and solid colour designs in matt and polished finishes. All full body tiles carry PEI 5 rating and breaking strength exceeding 1800N. We also produce step riser combinations (600x1200mm floor + 200x1200mm riser) for staircase applications where through-body consistency is essential.
